sweet afton studio.

a while back I mentioned that I would be interning with sweet afton, and the designs I did for them are done, printed and I've held them in my hands! I'm a little psyched.

some quick news to share: I've just started interning with a lovely letterpress/design studio in omaha called sweet afton, and I couldn't be more excited.
they did a little interview with me recently and you can check it out here!

sophomore year art - spring

here is the second half of the work I produced this year.
I created a slide show near the end of my advanced digital photography class so I'm including that here, and then I've put the few photos from the class that I took after I put that together in a new slide show with my 3D design work.

(best viewed high quality and full screen)

you can see a few more details and pictures here:

second year art recap - fall

this last year I produced a bit more art than the past one, so I've decided to post the semesters separately and put the work into the form of a slide show so as not to become overwhelming.

if you want a little more info, or perhaps more pictures, you can see the posts from the classes by using the links below. (though I posted some drawing and design work together so there might be some overlap)

stay tuned for the spring recap!

creative endeavors.

this is an exciting post to write, because this post is about my last ever project for 3D design ever!
for this we were supposed to be creating a display or "merchandiser" for a product, out of foam core. I chose a light bulb as my product, and after a lot of ideas I ended up going with a sort of electricity/lighting inspiration. I enjoyed this because it allowed me to do something a lot more angular than usual, however I can't say I loved the project. I made a ton of failed mock-ups and fought with the foam core a lot, so I was pretty ready to be done by the end, but I like how it turned out so we'll say it was a success.

here's some of the inspiration that I worked with at the beginning.

and here is the finished product.

creative endeavors.

for this project we had to create a freestanding structure with no adhesive, inspired by a natural object, with individual units that could hold an egg.

I chose an okra for my natural object.

and here is the structure before the eggs, assembled using different methods of slitting and slotting.

this is the finished piece with eggs. (which I spray painted to look more earthy and interesting). it's supposed to have a radial feel similar to the cross-section of the okra.

creative endeavors.

here are some pictures of the latest 3D project we did. we had to work with a semi-mass produced unit form and base the whole design on a grid. the process was far more mathmatical than I really like, but I'm really happy with how it turned out. this was also the first time I got to go out and explore different paper weights and types and I enjoyed that a lot.

this first part shows another idea I explored and still really love, but I ended up going with the other one because it was a bit more of a challenge and the grid lended itself to a little more of a unique composition.

so here documented are some of my first 3D design explorations. intensely aggravating, but interesting and satisfying? this will be an interesting class, really. considering there creation's proximity to the wedding, these were put together under atypical circumstances (translation: some were put together around one or two a.m.), but I think in the future I'll start enjoying it more and more? and they are extremely fun to photograph so that's definitely a plus.
also, as I was putting the final designs together on an intensely frustrating day, I was thankful to have people around to bring me hot tea in a special mug to cheer me up and keep me going. check it out:

creative endeavors: skyscrapers/cityscapes edition.

for the past couple weeks skyscrapers and cityscapes pretty much took hold of my studies, my artwork, everything, so I thought it would be fun to put some of it together and show you what I've been up to. (admittedly a bit after the fact. recent stuff is soon to come.)

first up I'll show you my transparency design color project. it was pretty time consuming and frustrating and I think it's fair to say that everyone involved had hesitations as to whether it would come out. however, I think it did and it went over very well so I'm okay with all the work that went into it.

next is my wood drawing. this one I was equal parts excited and frustrated with. it went through many stages, with the initial study, the first stopping point, and then this, the final product. I'm pretty attached to it now though.

in the midst of all of this I came across this on little things, and it just made me smile.

AND if all that wasn't enough, I was also writing about this work Apartment Hill by Wayne Theibaud. it's really a pretty terrific piece, and fit in nicely with all my studies of skyscrapers in art history. bam.

23 November 2011

creative endeavors.

as crazy as it sounds, I think I'm finally bonding with my classes this semester. it's gotten to the point where I actually have enjoyed a project or two. what in the world haha.
anyways here is one of the last design projects I did. we had to take a section of our reference picture and mix pigments to match the colors in it, and then we had to take a section and create four different color harmonies.

then here are the last two drawing projects I finished. the first one with the masks may be one of my favorite works of the whole semester. it's just so bright and fun.

the one where she shows she's still being creative.

admittedly it's been a while since I've done a creative endeavors post. there's a bit to catch up on, but thankfully I don't even have pictures of it all so this post can't be TOO obscenely long.
first, some of the last few design projects we've worked on, including the finished color temp design. woot!
then the last three drawings I have pictures of.
